Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

In November of 2000 my car was stolen late at night, the keys were inside the car. I reported it stolen the next day. I know, stupid. Apparently the car thief crashed into private property. After I reported the car stolen, a week later,an officer called my house to tell me that I was in deep trouble because I was going to be accused of tampering with evidence, apparently the key had been removed from the car and the car had been tampered with in the garage where the car was taken after the police found it. There was no way that I could get into the garage and break the steering wheel. I don't know how that happened. Anyway, during those days my family and I were getting ready to move to the caribbean and I left. recently. I checked to see if there was a warrant out for me and I think there is. How much trouble can I be in? What could I be facing? What can I do now to fix this. Help!

You should hire an attorney. You should then turn yourself in on the warrant. If you turn yourself in, you will likely not be held on bail. A lawyer will be able then to determine what evidence the DA's Office has. Feel welcome to call me to discuss. Bill Harrington, 617-426-7400.

I agree, you need to deal with the warrant if one has been issued. Contact an attorney to guide you through the process.

We handle many of these types of case. Go to my website at www.lawworcester.com and read about "Old Massachusetts Warrants" for further information. To answer your question, you should hire a lawyer who can accompany you to court to surrender yourself so that he can tell the judge that you are turning yourself in to clear up not only the warrant but the underlying charge. Typically, if you are now out of state, we try to arrange all of the details up front so that by the time you appear to surrender we already have a deal in place and know the liekly outcome. If you are ready to handle this on your terms, call me at (877) 752-7501. If you ignore this there is a good chance that at some point you will be stopped for a routine traffic stop and be taken into custody due to the warrant. Deal with it now on your terms before you get locked up and held.
