Legal Question in Insurance Law in Massachusetts

car insurance paid me twice

I got into a car accident in 2002. The car ins. co. sent me a check to fix my car for about $1700.00. The following week theycalled and said my car was ''totaled'' and asked for the funds to be returned to them and they would send the car loan co. the pay-off amount. I had already spent the money and never returned the funds. They took me to court and to avoid it going on my record I started paying them little amounts. I'm about to pay off the remaining amount, which is $1,650.00. Before I do so I need to know if I even legally have to pay that back, seeing how the car ins. co. made the mistake by sending me a check and then asking for it back. We have a court review date in June.
