I echo the previous answer and add as follows. You can certainly try to adhere to the statutory procedures, but they are rather complicated and difficult to understand. Additionally, failure to strictly conform to any number of the detailed requirements for filing, perfecting and enforcing the lien can result in the automatic dissolution of the lien entirely, after which it generally cannot be revived (although a new lien might be possible depending on the circumstances). Counsel experienced with mechanics lien filings can usually make the filings for a relatively small, reasonable fee, which may be well worth it if you have a realistic expectation of getting paid for the work.
