Legal Question in Workers Comp in Massachusetts

I work part time for a company and was going to the bank with deposits when I was hit by a car going through a red light. I missed a couple days work from both my part time jobs. Why would workman's compensation have to be involved if the accident was not my fault and what does workman's comp actually have to pay for? I don't understand why my work place which is in financial trouble has to be responsible?
