Re: internet info

Michigan has laws covering the privacy of specific information, such as arrest records, employment information, school records, privileges, etc., but not one that makes it illegal to publish your family tree or the names in it.

On a broader scale, publication of truthful information concerning the private life of a person that would not be offensive to a reasonable person and is of some informational value to the public should not be problematic. Furthermore, if the information comes from a public record, the media usually are not liable for reporting it and therefore, neither should a person who prints a family tree which has some value to the public as genealogy records are important to the public.

Ask them to point to the law upon which they rely. Then, please email me so that I can be educated.
