The only person(s) responsible to pay the lease is the person(s) who signed the lease. If the landlord permitted someone to stay in his property, without a lease, he can pursue that person for rent, as well. If you paid to terminate YOUR lease early, then it was YOUR responsiblity to see to it that the property was vacated, and the keys turned into the landlord. If YOU failed to vacate the property (this means getting the "ex" out too) then YOU failed to perform your duty under the early termination conditions, so ....Yes, YOU owe whatever rent is due under the original lease.
