Landlord changing lease to require renters insurance

Is it legal for a landlord to require you to carry renters insurance on items they dont even own?

Is this for a residential or commercial lease? It wouldn't be unusual in a commercial lease (usually in the form of premises liability insurance). But even so, it is to your benefit to have a renters insurance policy so that if anything happens to your stuff you can get reimbursed and replace it. If your landlord is asking that you get insurance naming them as an insured party for property they do not own, that doesn't really make sense.
