Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

I had a roommate who willingly decided to move out half way through our lease agreement because he didnt want to live with me anymore. He is still paying rent because his name is on the lease and he is obligated to. All of his belongings are out of the apartment but he still has a key and he still comes and goes as he pleases. Also, after he removed all of his belongings from the apartment, he put a new handle on the door of the bedroom he was renting and it is now locked to where noone can get in it. would it be legal for me to ask him to remove the handle and give me back the key to the apartment? and if he refused to would it be legal for me to have the locks on the apartment door changed? If I did so, would he still be obligated to pay rent because his name is on the lease?

He is on the lease and pays. He is entitled to be in the apartment and your suggested actions will get you in plenty of legal trouble. Just try and work things out until the lease is over. Kliszlaw.com. Tim Klisz
