Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

i moved into a new apartment 4 months ago. when i moved in i paid my security deposit, signed my lease, and got my keys all on the same day, all with the same property manager. since then the manager has been fired for questionable business and operations acts. now a new manager is in the office and says all record of my security deposit has been lost or may never existed. i paid via cashiers check and did not have a copy of it. so basically there is no proof i paid them BUT I DID!! i do have the lease thats says the security deposits total but not that i paid. i've never heard of an apartment complex letting you sign a lease and move in without paying your deposit first. should i bit the bullet and repay it because of fear of eviction? and can they legally make me pay something again because they goofed up? thank you so much!

Get a copy of the cashier's check from your bank. When it was cashed, I presume you had the name of the complex or something on it and that should be proof.
