Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

Merging laws of Illinois

I was in a left lane that went straight. The lane next to me was a merging lane. I was following traffic and the man in the car to my right continue to merge. I have a Jeep and he had a Sonota Hyundi. I was watching traffic infront of me, he was watching me and the people in front of me and behind, he proceed to hit the side of my jeep because he did not want to stop. I did not see him until my son (12) was yelling he is going to hit us!'' I was moving at that time and stopped after he collided with me. I backed up about a foot as that was as far as I could go, he proceeded to pull forward in front of me and stopped. He has told the rental car agency he got his vehicle from and his insurance that I hit him. How do I deal with a person that was at fault. According to Michigan law, people who merge do not have the right away, they must yield and the people in the correct straight away lane have the right. What is Illinois law and who is right?

Re: Merging laws of Illinois

Not many sane people driving a new car(It's a rental)would deliberately collide with a Jeep just because "he did not want to stop". Since you were watching him so closely, it seems that you both were insisting on the right of way with no regard for your respective vehicles or passengers.

Maybe an Illinois lawyer would have a different view of the matter.
