Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Michigan

Name Change for ex-convicts

Does having a felony conviction forbid one from changing their name legally for legitimate, business reasons?

The conviction was for property damage more than fifteen years ago and there has been no new convictions.

Re: Name Change for ex-convicts

No. A felony conviction is not an absolute bar to a name change in Michigan. However, a person with a criminal record is legally presumed in Michigan to be seeking a name change with fraudulent intent. The burden is proof is therefore on the petitioner to convince the court that s/he is not seeking a name change with fraudulent intent. An attorney may be of assistance in this regard. -Greg (248) 305-5840
