Legal Question in Workers Comp in Michigan

required to work without pay

my employer holds an annual fundraiser. employees are required to buy $75 tickets for themselves and are strongly urged to sell more tickets. i got a work assignment at the fundraising event, but wasn't told upfront that i would not be paid for that time. so i have to pay to attend the event and not get paid to work it. legal?
