Legal Question in Consumer Law in Missouri

I have student loans with original loan amounts of $3,938.00, the loans were from 1990-91. these loans are in default and I have had my paycheck garnished since 2006. The total credits the department show that I have repaid is $8,245.57 and that the balance that I still owe is $6,635.28. Is there anything I can do I will never get this paid off Im a single parent with children who will need to go to college and wont be able to because of my current status with these loans.

If you voluntarily pay more than is being garnsihed, or disclaim head of household status, you can speed up the time in which the loans are repaid. As these loans are old, you might be able to have them discharged in bankruptcy. But, that is a drastic step, and not one you should take for just this debt. If you take a teaching position, you might be able to get some of the loan amount forgiven.

Good luck
