The duration of the marriage is only one of the factors a court may consider in determining whether or not to order one spouse to pay the other spouse maintenance (called "spousal support" in Illinois). It sounds to me as if you would benefit from meeting with an attorney for a consultation to learn about the legal process and the substantive law involved in obtaining a Dissolution of Marriage. I have handled hundreds of Dissolution cases in the thirty-three years I have been practicing law, and I may be able to offer my services to you. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to make an appointment for a consultation.
