I don't think a general release would do you much good if you are really wanting to protect yourself. A general release just won't cover all the scenarios that I see arising from the ATV use. Certainly having them sign something that says "I release John Doe for any and all claims arising from his negligent acts", will not be upheld as a valid release.

If you do go with some general release, just make sure you carry good insurance (which you should have anyway) and make sure you either take care of dangerous conditions on the land or warn your friends of them.
