Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Missouri

I loaned a car to an employee with the agreement that he would pay me after finishing a project. He quit half way through, and moved to another city in the same state. The police say it's a civil matter (not criminal), and that I need a lawyer. Can I just reposess the car myself since I own it, own the tags, and pay for the insurance? I haven't heard from him in over a month now, and he won't return my calls.

Under the facts you described, it apepars that you may be within yrou rights to repossess the car. But, you shoudl problby alert the local police when you go to get it. They may want to accompany you to keep the peace. If, on th eother had, you had awritten sale agreement, that jsut say sthey are to pay when the job is doenl, and they haven't paid. you may have to accelerate the loan and use the courts to get it back. You might go consult directly wiyh a civil attorney in your area. Many offer a free or low cost initial consultation. Take all the paperwork you have and ask whre you stand. You may only have to pay them to wirte a leter or two.

Good luck
