Disability thru ssi

I have M.S. I am currently unable to work my job and need to know how long I have to be unable to work before I can apply for SSI ? Do I have to tell my employer that I am considering filing for SSI ?

If you are unable to work and your disability is expected to last a total of 12 months, you should apply immediately. Please note there is a difference between SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and DIB (Social Security Disability). You may qualify for both, depending on your overall financial situation. There is a waiting period for disability benefits and the application process can take quite a long time, so a prompt application is important
