Libel Online

Is anything a person says about another person online protected by free speech laws, or is it libel?

In other words, can a person say anything they want - tell lies - about another person in a web page they've created without having to worry about being sued for libel?

Written materials on the Internet are subject to libel and slander laws. Truth is generally a defense, but deliberates lies can be actionable.
