Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Hampshire

Death of a homeowner

If a homeowner with property in NH dies without having a will, does the property automatically go to the surviving wife? What gov't dept would that person have to contact?

Thanks

Re: Death of a homeowner

If the wife's name was also listed on the deed to the property with the husband, the property does pass to her by law. However, the wife will be unable to sell the property unless she has has deed showing that she is now the sole owner. A petition for estate administration should be filed in the probate court. An adminitrator would be appointed who could then properly execute a deed to the surviving wife.
