Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

I had 2 bounced checks for a total of $35.00 in November 12th,2010 to A&P food stores. They aren't showing up on my bank account records and according to me they dont exsist. I just received a call on July 14th 2011, from a lawyer from a&P claiming i ower $950.00 for these 2 checks, and when i asked why so much? apparantly i owe for the collection agency fees which i never heard from at all or i would have payed this checks right away. This lawyer Jason Moore wants to take me to court if i dont pay all of the $950.00. MY question is do i have to pay all of the money? or do i have to just cover the balance of the bounced checks because i never was contacted by a Collection Agency at all, but this lawyer can contact me in 1 phonecall but the collection agency cant in 8 months....
