collection agency will not provide address
A collection agency, Certegy, has placed an invalid returned check debt on my credit report for a check passed by someone with the same name in another state in 2005 . I've never been contacted about this prior to it showing up on my credit report. I called them to dispute the claim and they told me to send a ''disassociation'' letter to deny the validity of the claim. They will not provide me with a physical address, only a P.O. Box. I told them I am in need of a physical address so that I may send a certified letter with receipt. They refused. This is not my debt, I have (had) perfect credit and now this is on my report and they refuse to remove it. What can I do? Thanks.

Obtain a copy of your credit report from the 3 major reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, Trans Union). It will come with a dispute form. Complete each dispute form and return it with any documentation. If you get your credit report online, you can click the dispute link and actually do this online. Once you do this, the credit reporting agency has 30 days to investigate. If they cannot verify accuracy, they will remove the information and provide you with a new report showing the removal. If this does not lead to removal, then get an attorney to assist you.
