Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

I am about to apply for a passport and I am a legal U.S. Citizen. I was told that you can't travel out of the country if you have a criminal background. My complete background consist's of 2 DWI's (one in September of 2007 and another in October of 2007, 9 days apart). I also pleaded guilty to Criminal tresspassing and Criminal Mischief in July of 2009. I paid my fines and made it right with all courts and parties so it is all behind me at this point. I am hoping to travel to Italy this summer but am worried about my history being a problem. Could you help me find the information I need for this? Thank you.

As a citizen you are entitled to make full use of any passport in your possession issued by the United States government. The problem may be that some country, like Canada, may refuse to admit you if you have a particular criminal history. I would not think it would be the case with you.

If the person giving you the subject information is just some Joe Blow on the street, ignore him.
