Change my last name to my boyfriend's?

My boyfriend and I are living together...we have both been married before and have obligations, assets, etc that we do not wish to "mingle". Can I leagally change my last name to his? Is this costly and how long would it take?

hi - you can change your name by filing a complaint in the court to do so. you'll have to pay a filing fee, advertising fees , and so on. it's pretty complicated to do it on your own, since the court expects you to follow the same court rules as if you were a lawyer. usually, lawyers charge about $1500.00 plus the costs noted above. feel free to call me at 609 263-0089 if you have any other questions. good luck !!

Re: Change my last name to my boyfriend's?

It may not be in your interest to change your name to his. It seems to me that you are trying to avoid his former obligations and he is trying to avoid your former obligations. While changing your name to his would not make you obligated, it would certainly confuse things. There may be a better way to handle these matters. You really should seek the advice of counsel before you do anything. If you want me to assist you, feel free to call me at 856-546-8010; mention LawGuru and your first consultation is free.
