Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Husband wants to adopt my son

My husband would like to adopt my son. His biol. father was never in our lives. What rights does the biol. father have and what are the steps to make this adoption happen. Do we need an attorney? How much does it usually cost? I have no idea were he could be we haven't had any contact at all. No child support, never met my son.

Re: Husband wants to adopt my son

hi -

step-parent adoptions are done all of the time in nj. the natural father must be notified. if you don't know where he is, a private investigator may be able to find him.

the court charges $75.00 to file the complaint; a new birth certificate is $6.00. the investigator is whatever he charges; the agency report is approximately $500.00. lawyer fees vary - i usually charge a flat fee + costs ($2500 + costs).

you are better off with an attorney - the court requires you to follow the same procedures, as if you were one yourself. feel free to call me at 609 263-0089, if you have any questions. good luck !!
