marriage name change

Does a marriage licence automatically change a woman's name, or does she have to submit a request to change her name after she is married?

Re: marriage name change

Thank you for your inquiry. Please be advised that I have not been retained to represent you and I am basing this information on the limited facts you supplied. However, the simple answer to your question is that your marriage license will legally change your name if you opt to take your husband's last name. The State will recieve a copy of the license for legal purposes. However, be advised that you will still have to notify credit cards, banks and anyone you wish to become aware of your new name. In the event you wish to change your name back to your maiden name after taking your husband's name, there are legal documents to file. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Re: marriage name change

Thank you for your e-mail. Normally a woman can change her name upon receiving a marriage license, without additional application. However, if the woman gets divorced and wants to resume a former surname, this must be done as part of the divorce proceedings or by separate court order. If you have further questions regarding this, please arrange for a consultation with one of our experienced attorneys in our Family Law Department. K.Scheiner
