Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Hi,

I was staying in a Condo for last 2 years. I vacated the condo in Sep. I gave 30 day notice for moving out. The LL has still not returned the security deposit. When I moved in the Condo was in not so good condition. I didn't say anything as it was not stopping from living there and I continued without complaining. When I left, I left it broom cleaned and I cleaned all the appliances.

Now, he is saying to the current tenant that he has spent on cleaning, painting etc. I have only got the new tenant as well as a favor.

Am I supposed to pay for the cleaning and painting for the new tenant to move in?

As per law, is he supposed to deduct my deposit for ordinary wear and tear?

Tenant is responsible for damages beyond ordinary wear an tear. You may have problems with proof because you did not document or record anything. Nevertheless, landlord must account for the security deposit within thirty days and can be liable for double the amount due if that is not done.
