Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Property Lease Agreement

My daughters signed lease to rent a privately owned townhouse together and they have not moved in yet but now one wants to back out. Is there a way that the lease can be cancelled or possibly shortened to a 6 month term?

Re: Property Lease Agreement

Once they signed the lease, the tenant and landlord are responsible for the terms of the agreement. Whether or not they moved in, the lease becomes a valid contract once signed. You have some options to modify or cancel the agreement. First recommendation would be to contact the landlord to explain the situation and negotiate a different term. You should also send formal written notice to the landlord if you intend to cancel the agreement.
