Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

My roommate left 2 months after signing a 1-year lease. I had to pay her part of the rent until I found a replacement. The amount I paid was more than she put down for the security deposit so I didn\'t give her part of the security deposit back to her. Now she want\'s to sue me for theft. Will I hold up in court with proof of the money I paid out? Did I infact steal her money if we scheduled to have a meeting about the money but she never showed up?

It would seem that your first roommate failed to pay her share of several months of rent and that

you have paid her part of the rent for those months. So long as the security deposit refund check was made payable to you only I do not see a theft claim being upheld.

Call me if you like.
