Your only recourse seems to be to litigate, under an action called "Partition", which requires that he either buy you out or sell. This is somewhat complicated, requires an appraisal of the property, and is best if an attorney assists you.

Re: me and a friend bought a house together

THIS is why you need a written agreement when you enter a business arrangement, or share in ANYTHING you are not willing to walk away from if you have a disagreement! I suggest you try talking with your 'partner' again, and tell him he has to either buy you out, or agree to sell, and see if he will agree to buy you out. If he says no, go to an atty, have him/her write a letter saying the same thing, and explaining they will only have 1 option if he does not cooperate, to file suit to force him to buy you out, or sell.
