Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

Hello ,

I have been living in an apartment for last 6 yrs and my landlord holds a security deposit amounting 2500 dollars. This year once our lease term ends , we are planning to move out of the apartment and worried about hard earned security deposit money.

The landlord has a bad history of returning back the security deposit money to the leaving tenants , i have seen /heard from the leaving tenants in last few years that he sends them some legal notice once they vacated and prohibits returning the money back.

There are some wear and tear in the unit since i have been living there for last 6 years. I want your help /advise /options/opinion to get my money back .

Thanks for your help.
