Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

Recently expired license - must appear in court???

My license expired approx 3 weeks before I was pulled over by an officer and given a ticket for an expired license. Much to my surprise when I called to settle the ticket, I was told that it is mandatory that I appear in court tomorrow (4/8/04). Because I am unemployed my mind was on finding new work, and getting my license renewed escaped my mind at the time. I do recall that my wife told me that I had to gather special documents (6 point system) before I could renew my license at the end of March. She was mistaken and I only had to the end of Feb. Yes, it was part neglect on my part, but I have a perfect driving record and the officer randomly ran my tags when he pulled me over. How should I plea in court? Do I have any defense? And how come there isn't a fee on the ticket for the violation? Thanks in advance for your help.--name removed--T.

Get your license immediately. Plead not guilty in court and consult an attorney as soon as possible. Or retain an attorney today who can enter a not guilty plea and ask for a trial date. Call if you wish further advice 732-286-2170
