Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

Searching your vehical

Recently there was a routine police seat belt check at an exit off ramp near my home, you know they type where they stand in the middle of the road and give everyone not wearing a seat belt a ticket. i passed the officer and i was wearing my seat belt , but there was an intersection with a red so i had to stop which was apprx. 60 feet away from the officer. he then walks up from behind me and commands me to pull off to the side i do so promptly. He then approaches my car and asked why me registration sticker has a torn corner( which was about 1.5 centimeters in length). i respond by telling ''i just got my windshield replaced and the sticker torn a little during the process.'' However, the rip or tear conflict with any sort of information. Then he ask for my paper and i give it to him and while doing so he say '' your car has an odor of marijuana.'' I respond '' that is impossible i don't smoke marijuana so my car can't smell like it.'' He makes a few threats that he will call the county and get the dogs on me if i don't let him search the car so, i comply because i have nothing to hide and i didn't want to waste my whole day being there. So, he searched my car and found nothing. What can i do about police officers that lie to search.

Re: Searching your vehical

Nothing. You will never be able to prove he didn't smell anything. Just be happy he didn't actually find anything.
