Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New Mexico

My ex boyfriend and I had a verbal agreement about a car that was registered under my name that after the split he agreed to take the car and pay for the monthly payments. He ended up not paying for it and I had to pay off the.car on my own. After he had driven it for five months. I filed a civil suit I want to know if the verbal agreement will hold up in a NM court.
