Legal Question in Appeals and Writs in New York

Amend my complaint

I am a pro se litigant who needs to amend my original complaint. Opposing Counsel has just answered my original complaint. They have put in their answer with the court on January 5th. However, I have not yet been served with any answers papers. Is their a time limit by which I will be barred from amending my complaint. Does the clock start ticking when they put in their answer with the court, or when I am served???

You have 20 days after service of a pleading to amend your complaint.
