Legal Question in Business Law in New York

internet liable

I have been the victim of anonymous e-mails being sent to a potential acquisition partner questioning my abilities and making false claims about me. I suspect thtat the individual may be a coworker.

If I find out if this is true what are my rights, if any

Re: internet liable

You probably mean "Internet Libel", and you are correct. Libel is (from the law dictionary) an "untruthful statement about a person, published in writing or through broadcast media (which the internet arguably is), that injures the person's reputation or standing in the community." Because libel is a 'tort' (a civil wrong), you can bring a lawsuit against the person who made the false statement.

Depending on the actual circumstances, you may also have another claim called 'tortious interference with contractual relationship' if you have a contract for the acquisition and that unknown person is trying to interfere (or 'sabotage') that transaction.
