Legal Question in Business Law in New York

I was served with the documents that I am being sued.

The first step I had to find a lawyer and answer the complaint.

I had a free consultation with a lawyer (zero cost was agreed upon on the phone before the consultation).

During the consultation, the lawyer told me and my wife that he will request the time extension to answer this complaint from the plaintiff lawyer as a courtesy, whether we will go with his services or not (his exact words).

We went with a different firm. They contacted the original lawyer and advised him that I rendered their service.

The original lawyer send me a letter regarding the matter along with the final bill for legal services rendered:

1. Meet with me to discuss legal matters.

2. Telephone conference with the plaintiff attorney regarding the extension.

3. Other activities - analysis of legal issues.

First and second services must have been free.

The third I did not authorized.

What should I do?
