Legal Question in Business Law in New York

I am starting a business, DBA in New York State and I will be importing goods (area rugs) from the UK. Are there any additional licenses i have to have or added filings I'll have to make, besides normal NYS things, because I am importing

Depending on the quantity of rugs being brought in you may need to procure a license from Customs. The country of origin of the rugs may also play a role. The duties for the imported rugs, in part, would be based on the type of rugs and whether or not the rugs are new or used. Since you are new at this, you should consider hiring a customs broker who will handle all the documents for you and plan the logistics.

As far as your business entity, a DBA does not limit your liability and does not afford you any protection from legal claims and creditors. You should consider incorporating your business. Consult an attorney before you choose the entity type.

The other attorney is right on point here. You will likely need a license from Customs. There is probably a similar requirement in the country of origin. Don't operate the business as a DBA unless you have liability insurance covering all possible expose with a very high limit ($5 million). Consult with a good business attorney in your area for specific advice.
