Do non-compete agreements typically apply to work done for free? (Can they ever be applied to non-contract, non-employment "work"?)

Q. Do non-compete agreements typically apply to work done for free?

A. Maybe. The individual performing the free work would have the right to ask the other individual receiving the free work to agree to not compete.

Q. Can they ever be applied to non-contract, non-employment "work"?

A. As long as there is consideration involved (ie. money or work) given to the individual to agree to not compete, the answer would be yes.
