Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York

creating a business

I am in the process of starting a business, and a wholesaler i'll be working with required my Tax ID number to process an order. I found this was easy enough to get on the IRS web site, but in the Tax ID form there is a space for ''legal name'', either business or personal. I'd like to register in the name of the business, but how do i obtain a ''legal'' business name? through incorporation or something similar? just trying to understand the (minimum) steps required to become an ''official'', legal business. thanks in advance!

Re: creating a business

The easiest way to do this is through incorporation, You can file by way of a DBA however corporate status, while costing a little, can if you handle the responsibility correctly can save you a bundle down the line.

You should seek out a lawyer and an accountant. Your lawyer can probably recommend one to you.

Good Luck and Congratulations.

You are not a legal business unless you are registered as a business with the Dept. of State for the state you operate in. An attorney can set you up as a business or you can try to do it properly yourself.
