Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

debt collectors

i received 2 notices at an old address, plus one at my present address for a past due debt. They are in my old married name, and the debt is from the 90's apparently RJM aqusitions bought the debt and have given me three options to pay it. On the back it says if i do not notify them of my intentions then they will ''obtain verifications of the debt or obtain a copy of judgment and mail me a copy.'' What should i do? Is this legal after sll these years? They also mentioned that if i comply by May 22 my accounts will be ''satisfied in Full'' i live in NY. please any advise will be very helpful. Thank you

Re: debt collectors

if you owe the debt, and the card was yours, negotiate a settlement. They will accept as little as 50% if you can establish you are in financial difficuilty without regular income. Otherwise, they will generally accept somewhere between around 75% if part is a lump sum, and the rest is reasonable monthly installments.
