Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

lawsuit with out being served

I have a collection law firm after me. Due to a family medical emergency (my mom had a series of strokes over the past 3 months) I did not get back to them in a timely matter. They sued me, but never notified me of the suit or court date. They just froze all my bank accounts. It is a 1400.00 debt from when I was unemployed. I was planning on turning this over to my debt management firm, but did not have the chance. Can they sue me and not notify me? They left me with nothing money wise. Do I have any rights? Can I sue them? What do I do now?

You may be entitled to have your account unfrozen. You need to file a show-cause. Call your local court for more info on how to do this, or consult an attorney.
