Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

summons not served

A card and note were left on my garage door while I was away. The note stated that it was urgent that I call regarding an important matter. There was nothing stating that this was from a process server, but I believe it was related to a lawsuit involving an alleged credit card debt, since I have been receiving threatening letters from a collection agency lawyer.

Am I legally required to call? What happens if there was a summons and it was not served? Is there any way the case can still be brought to trial and I can lose by default?
