Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

My cousin and I fought in my house she lives in the basement and I live on the first floor. First we were arguing in her apartment (basement) then I left and she follows me upstairs to my apartment so we are now arguing in the doorway with my mother in between trying to close the door but my cousin put her foot in the doorway preventing her from closing it, my grandma brother and mother are yelling at her to go back downstairs but she wouldn't. Now we are cursing each out then she hits me and I hit her back and we fight for a couple of seconds then my brother pulls us apart. The next day I thought it was over but while I was out my mother calls me and says cops are looking for me so I went down to the station and was arrested. Now I'm being charged with class A misdemeanor assault whats the worst that can happen to me? I've never been in trouble with the law before, would that make any difference?

You are facing up to a year in jail if convicted after trial. On a plea bargain you would face no jail as a first offender. Since you have all the witnesses o your side, fighting the case is recommended. If your family owns the house or is the primary tenant you should probably ty to have her evicted to defuse any future problems.
