after being grand jury hearing how long does your public defender have to tell you if you were in fact indicted or not..thank you

Most attorneys would tell their clients as soon as they heard the decision. If you were indicted, the court should also advise you of that. Public defenders carry a very large caseload, especially in New York, so it may take a couple of days. You could contact the DA's office for the information.
