Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

My former roommate stole $4000 worth of equipment from me. I went to the cops. It's grand larceny. The cops said they went to see him but he didn't open the door. They were supposed to go back today but I haven't heard from them. It's been weeks. They say they can't get inside anyway and can't get a warrant unless they know for sure he has it inside. The day I moved out, I realized my camera was missing, so I asked the roommate about it. He pretended he never even saw it. But I know it was under the shelf, and it�s just him and I in the apartment. So when he went out for an errand, I searched his room for a bit and I found a camera that looked exactly like mine. He had added a grip and black taped the brand and make, so I wasn�t sure, so I just took a picture of the serial number at the bottom. (he has lots of his own cameras). Then, after I moved out, I compared it to my serial number and realized it was mine. How is that not enough proof? What can I do?

It sounds like the police are working on it, but they have certain procedures they much follow and can't just go by your word that your possessions are in his apartment. You might want to try the civil route and contact a civil, as opposed to criminal attorney and start a lawfuit against him. Meanwhile, yo might also contacct the district attorney's office.
