Do not plead guilty. Even a misdemeanor in New York will show up in your state in any background check if you apply for job and credit. Usually a first offender can have the charges reduced to a non-criminal offense. If you can afford an attorney hire one, if not contact the public defender or legal aid society in the jurisdiction where the court is located.

A guilty plea to petit larceny, a misdemeanor, can result in one year in jail or three years probation and a permanent criminal record which will follow you throughout your life whereever you live. That being said a competent criminal defense attorney can help you find the best possible solution. I handle matters such as yours on a daily basis and in most ,if not all instances ,for first offenders, they will not serve jail time or probation. Depending on the jurisdiction,I most often can negotiate a diversionary program which will after completion result in NO CRIMINAL RECORD. Do NOT PLEAD GUILTY!! You should not expect jail time, but it would be highly recommended to have an experienced lawyer with you defending you and preserving your rights in court. It would also greatly increase the chance of lowering the charges or possible dismissal. We have substantial experience handling these types of cases and reasonable fees, however, we would need some more information before making a complete and proper determination.
