Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Child's name

Hello, I was dumb when I had my son in Feb 2005. I put my son's father's last name instead of mine and we were never married or wil get married. He wouldn't sign the birth certificate. So I got one in the mail without his name on it and his last name for my son. A year later I got him to sign it, but he lied and said he was born at one hosital and was really born at another so the state couldn't get money out of him for my son. Is there a way to change my son's last name to mine without his worthless father knowing and making trouble for me, or changing it at all?

Re: Child's name

If you would like to change your child's last name, you need to file a name change petition with the court. If you contact me, I can assist you with filing the paperwork and appearing in Court. I need more information about the child's father before I can give you a definite answer, but based upon what you stated in your email you may not have to notify the father. However, I would need to discuss the facts with you more in depth. Please feel free to contact me.
