Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Petitioning the Court to open adoption records

I am an adult adoptee born in Manhattan, whose adoption was finalized in the surrogate court in Queens. I need my records opened for peace of mind. I have some non-identifying info. but I need more. This is not medical but more mental anguish that I am experiencing. I would like to know how succesful I would be in petitioning the court on my own and being successful. I do not have to meet my adoptive parents,if they do not wish to be found, I am a stable professional, not wishing to alter anyone's life, but I would like to have the court either to give me my identifying information or have the court send a letter to my mother letting her know I am searching and why to see if she would just give me a little family history.

My family originated in Barbados and I want to need to know my family history.

Re: Petitioning the Court to open adoption records

I am licensed to practice only in Texas. I don't know what NY law is for opening adoption records. You would be better off to consult with a NY attorney. Sorry.
