Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I wanted to file a modification petition and it is about 6 months since it has been signed by the judge. I was told to wait at least a year before going back. My concern is, the longer I wait and things continue the way they are, isn't it harder to have it changed? I am worried that my kids' relationship is being severed because they are not together consistently enough. Should I listen to this attorney and wait or will it harm me if I wait and let things keep going the way they are?

I do usually tell people that your attorney who knows your situation in depth is probably the one to listen to and not someone with only limited knowledge of your situation and the judge you will appear before.
