Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

I need to get advice about how to determine dog ownership. I bought a dog when i was living with my ex girlfriend. we have since broken up and she threatened to take me to court because she is rich and wants the dog. I have the receipt of purchase for my dog but her name is on the Vet papers. the only reason they are on the vet papers is because when I brought him in for the first time I was busy holding him and she put her name on it. I have paid for most of the vet bills including many of the major purchases. what can I do?

An animal is considered chattel or personal property. Sue her in small claims court for return of your personal property and all documentation (receipts, bills, etc.,) proving you are the rightful owner. The court may or may not have jurisdiction to return the dog to you and may only provide you wih money damages. If you go to a higher court, your costs will be exponentially higher, along with attorneys fees.
